It's 30 to copyright anything. I have several copyrights for my songs and book, so as I said, they recently changed the law and anything is considered copyrighted as soon as it is written. It isn't necessary to register it anymore, but registering it gives added protection. It is 30 for one page or 1000 pages. I usually send an entire collection of songs for 30 and save myself paying 30 for each one if it is sent individually.
Well, the "poor mans copyright" which is the method of sending the work to yourself technically is a copyright but it won't hold up in court because the ease of abuse of the method. Someone can just steam the letter open and insert whatever it is that they wanted into the letter. It won't hold water in court. I would recommend checking out this site - http://www.copyright.gov/ - You may also want to use a Digital Time Stamp from the US Postal service. These provide excellent 3rd party evidence.
Gotcha. That's why I asked. Thanks.
"Icababe, can't you just go down to the local notary and have them stamp whatever it is?"---- Unfortunately, that doesn't count as a legal copyright. As I said before, copyright protection sets in the second you write it. The MDCA has added a few other protections to online content. The unfortunate truth is that nothing online is safe. Even CopyScape isn't that safe, except from would-be infringers...... If you've written a piece, and can verify when you wrote it online, you can do a "whois" search on a domain where you find your work posted against your permission. You have to write a cease and desist letter to the site's owner. What you're looking for though is the site's host. If the host operates inside the US, you can send them a DMCA violation notice. By law, they have to take down the site until the infringing material is removed....... Another method which Lucky would probably know more about than me is putting your work up in picture format. Within the pic put hidden text. Something like, "(Title) is being used without the permission of (your name)." .......... Again, there is no foolproof way to protect your work, especially on the web. If you feel strongly about your work, set up Google alerts for some of the text in your piece........ Don't put any of your work on any website which is search engine indexed.............. Yes, mailing the work to yourself sometimes works. The work is technically copyrighted, but that method rarely holds up in court. By that I mean that the person who uses that method rarely had the money to launch a court battle. (DMCA= Digital Millenium Copyright Act of 1998)
You can copywrite something by mailing it to yourself in a sealed envelope, and then don't open the envelope. At least is used to be that way.
Icababe, can't you just go down to the local notary and have them stamp whatever it is? It costs a little more than a stamp, but what's five bucks as opposed to 45 cents for a stamp?
But without "first rights" (which you usually lose when it's search engine indexed) you won't make much off your writing.
in the computer age, websites have time dated pages. every post creates a new one. this is the "Cache" on the google searches. and this site gives you the rights to your writings. btu more importantly, with little effort, they can subantiate any claims to ownership and origination dates.
Out of curiosity... If you're wanting to copyright anything here, you're wasting your time. If you want to ensure your rights, don't post it here.
There is what's called a "poor man's copyright". Type the piece up, and mail it to yourself registered mail. Don't open it when you get it back. While it's not foolproof if you have to enter litigation, it can't hurt. The only sure way is to pay the copyright office. I can't even remember how much it is anymore. I usually sell full rights to my work. You get paid more, and you don't have to worry about editing once they buy it outright.
You can in fact do as Berni said, although intellectual property is technically protected the minute you write it. If you want to keep it from being plastered all over the internet, I'd suggest a password protected website which isn't search engine indexed.......
You copyright it at the Library of Congress and there is no requirement of pages, but a copyright is legal now as soon as it is written.
ica do you know where you can copywrite your writing, and is there a requirement of pages
I guess I better get off my Obama criticism kick and write about something that people want to read like about how wonderful Obama is. :)
What the winning blog will look like: http://ahmnodtheare.wordpress.com
I hope that I will not be a victim of discrimination in this contest because of my cultural heritage. lol

Gurr, you are a genius. YOu knew money was the only way to motivate people... lol, keep the banner up for as long as possible so a to get all you can ot of your dough.
That means that my paper of "political crybabies" will work for something. Very cool if you ask me.
Just to keep everyone's panties out of a bunch, my last few posts on here is "tongue-in-cheek". With the termperment around here sometimes I thought I should make that clear.
Eric forgot to mention that sucking up is permitted ;-)
Well darn it! I guess I better get busy writing another blog entry. Although my "Correllation" entry was pure genius, I did call Gurr and Matt Bush and Cheney. Knew that would come back to bite me! lol.
the waiving the white flag entry by me yesterday will come in a close second. I'm excited I could really use the $250
What a well written blog entry Eric, I'm pulling for you to win this thing!
Question: Do we have to actually "submit" the blog in some way for it to be considered for the contest, or is simply posting a blog sufficient for it to be considered?
"The editors of U4prez will judge, and determine the winner."
Whos judging? Lucky?
The answer is yes. "Good luck blogging. Judging will begin February 2nd and existing blogs are eligible. No entries after March 27th 2009 will be considered for this contest, but may be considered for future contests."
Question: are existing blogs considered for this- that is, ones written before this notice?
Just make the check out to Lucky_num1. lol
This should be intersting.
