Seriously, this is unbelievable! So, all of our unemployed are enjoying themselves and drawing benefits on purpose so that they can lose their houses? So, unwed teenage mothers are getting "knocked up" on purpose to get money from the government? Why are we asking if we should copy China on how we handle unemployment? I must say, this is the first I have ever heard of the English having an army or a part in owning the Phillipines. I remember my history classes, as well as books I have read, about this issue. The Phillipines were Spanish, and then American, before they were independant. I must agree w/ Erock on this one.

Well then arjay are you willing to move to europe? cause in the cause of championing right we should by that logic. We left the PI to the PI I don't know of any countrys we have taken over. Do we have a colony in Korea, Vietnam< Kosovo,

That goes for America too, Grrrrrr. When we got land from Spain after our war with them in 1898, if we truly believed in freedom and the Constitution, we should have liberated them and went home. We held the Philippines for fifty years, and lest we forget, the Japanese bombed there on the same day as Pearl Harbor. America has had its imperial ambitions, let's not lie to ourselves, and since World War II America has sought global influence and rights to resources instead of land, but it's the same game. There would be no America had the British honored those living here previously. The British had to seize the land. That's not colonization, that's theft. America exists because of theft.
Colonies, jeez. When the Athenians set up colonies in Sicily and Asia Minor, before other people were there, those were colonies. Everything else in human history was theft, because most every other place was inhabited, and it took force to overcome the indigenous peoples. The Phillipines, a "Spanish Colony", were stolen from the people who lived there. Hong Kong was long called a British colony, but let's be honest, it was an island they stole from China. Colonizing Mars makes sense, there's no intelligent beings for us to steal land from there. The French colonizing Indochina, that was theft, because there were people already there.

You seem to forget that the PI was an English colony. I hope the rest of you history is better. The PI came under our protection as well as englands but we were the bastards right?
Plus I would point you to war in the early 1900s between Russia and Japan during which Teddy Rosevelt won a noble peace prize for ending. Japan had no love for Russia. But the US was more worried about economicially dominating China and protecting our colony in the Philiapense. Plus you can look at the US immigration policy towards japan which was by all accounts racist.

No but it should not mean you can turn around and demand that they love the US. The fact is we fought in China for our own economic interests. japan did not need to be an enemy of the US. It could have been made an allie against the Soviet Union.
I would direct you to Modern Times by Paul Johnston. Or any history about china at the time. You would know that the nationalist government was very curropt and did not have the support of the people.

Just because the US helped defend the Nationalist government does not mean the Chinese people should have greated US with a parade the government we protected did nothing to help the people of China at all.
You mean the Nationalists? They where curropt. And lets face it the US was anti-Japanese for the simple fact that we wanted to economically dominate China. You can even look at the US putting pressure on the UK in 1920 to end its ties with Japan this despite the fact that the UK and Japan had been good allies for years. I have no illusions about japan's harshness towards China but japan would have been a check on the commmunists rising to power in China. Heck that nationalists where to hated by the people to stop them.
As I recall our fighters flew air cover for the chinese, PEOPLE our very few Marines advised fought and died for the Chinese people. Where was that a corrupt government?Unless you take the position that the japanese were liberators. Arjay the Chinese government was a choice of the people then.

We should copy China sometimes. Some guys in China screwed up China's markets because of their own greed and China scheduled them for execution. I'm not a big fan of China, but they nailed this one.

Just because we fought the Japanese does not mean we defended China. Japan took much of the important parts of China, and they didn't go through us to do it. Millions of Chinese were killed before the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Don't ruin history by oversimplifying it and always making America the hero.
