If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result, I must content our president is insane.
The so-called stimulus plan is nothing new. Governments in Japan, France, Sweden, Argentina, Brazil and countless others have tried this approach. The United States tried it under Roosevelt during the Great Depression, it did not work then, it will not work now.
A few specific examples.
Germany after World War I
Brazil in 1990 (inflation rate reached 30,000%
The lost decade in Japan
My question to Mr. Obama is thus:
What leads you to believe that this will work?
During the Great Depression President Roosevelt paid farmers not to grow certain crops and to destroy millions of hogs to raise the price. This at a time when people were starving.
Today President Obama wants to take hundreds of billions of dollars out of an already bad economy, and give it state governments. The same state governments (like California) who have wasted their money for years and now find themselves at the brink of bankruptcy.
This administration and the spending plan have become dangerous!
In the past I've written that my biggest concern was the baby-boomers and social security. This is no longer in my view the biggest threat facing our nation. Social Security payments will be cut in half within ten years, and perhaps as soon as five years.
THE BIGGEST PROBLEM WE NOW FACE IS WAR IN EUROPE AND CIVIL UNREST AT HOME
Many will comment that this is alarmist rhetoric. No, it is in fact history. Facism took root in Europe during the thirties in response to a devalued Mark in Germany and economic strife in Italy. This pattern will be repeated in the coming years. As the economies of the world crumble, people will look for a scapegoat. When a critical mass rallies around the cry of these despots, war is sure to follow. Here in the United States, it is not unlikely that separatists groups will arise, and will have political power. Those without political power will resort to violence.
When this pattern of history begins to repeat itself the world will once again look to the United States for assistance in fighting tyranny. When the people of the United States try to help they will find that the government has looted the treasury and there is no money left to buy bullets.
Recessions and Depressions can be good things. They expose weakness in the economy, they expose bad businesses and bad banks. When the bottom is found these assets are liquidated and we can begin to build a stronger future.
This is not happening today. We are taking the path of least resistance by borrowing from our future and printing money.
The word crisis is attached to every perceived social injustice. How many times have you heard the word from politicians in the past? We still talk about the health care crisis, the environmental crisis, the oil crisis, the banking crisis. Let me tell you my friends you are about to learn the meaning of the only crisis that matters, the survival crisis.
My fear isn't that the stimulus package will not work, my fear is that spending will work. GDP will stabilize and the unemployment rate will stabilize or go down. But this will only encourage the Democrats to spend more money, and the Republicans will have lost the will to fight. The next spending package will be smaller, but will not work, to be followed by the biggest monstrosity yet. And then the wheels of the economy will collapse entirely.
I watched President Obama's press conferece in stunned silence. I felt sure that the media would understand that we are headed for disaster, Obama said it himself. Not one member of the press brought up Japan, the hyper-inflation of South America, or the spending failures of the Roosevelt administration. Listening to Obama respond to the questions was even more disturbing. The man doesn't appear to posses even a basic understanding of economics.
Perhaps I am wrong. Perhaps Mr. Obamas ego has not gotten the best of him and he is not insane. There is only one way to tell. We must force the media through e-mails and phone calls to demand action. If they can force him to answer the question, "What historical precedence leads you to believe this will work?" maybe they can force him in to a moments reflection and we can pull back from the brink.
If not, we face tragedy. This is the case because today, it would be so easy to fix the economy. We have burdened business with excessive taxes and regulations for decades. We should peel back a few layers of regulation, eliminate the corporate tax, lower the tax rate on incomes for all levels of income, raise interest rates (to stabilize the dollar), and increase the deposit requirement for banks. We should let the bad businesses fail, let the bad banks fail, and sell the assets for whatever can be gained.
The economy would grow, as it always has when this is the path nations have followed. I don't believe this will happen. We will follow the path of Hoover by raising taxes, and the path of Roosevelt by spending ever more to smaller interest groups in an effort to hold power at any cost. I hope that cost is not your life.

Once again it is painfully clear that this past Presidential race was in fact all about "race" and racially motivated farce. Palin is attacked left and right and over trivial stuff like her warddrobe and fashion when Obama's own Princess Wife also had equally designer and expensive clothes. It's perfectly non-racist to attack someone if they are white, Jewish, Asian, or Hispanic. That's not racist is it? No. I am sure Obama would have bailed out Enron and just given them a little stern slap on the wrist and give them a huge bail out money and deem them too big to fail. Please. All failures need to fail and crooks sent to prison!!! Taxes should be cut across the board and porks leaned out!!! Some Federal agencies should be shut down as well. Pork should be cut both in private sector as well as the Federal sector.
Obama is clearly delusional. He himself is a wealthy millionaire yet he has a bizarre view that the wealthy should be punished. If he overtaxes the businesses how will they create more jobs? You have to give them incentive and motivation to expand and hire... what will overtaxing them do? Obama will increase tax on every business and they will have to pass it onto the consumers. How can things get better? Because Obama wills it so? Right. Logic says, it will only get worse unless everyone becomes just as insane as Obama. Obama has no concept of anything... he has never had a job, never ran a business, and really just lives on idealistic fumes and nothing more. I think you're making this too personal concerning Palin, David. The press would have jumped on anyone McCain named as VP. The fact that she was a virtual unknown outside of Alaska gave the media something to dig. I think that lately the historians have started to look at the evidence a little more closely vis-a-vis the Great Depression, and it is now clear that he made things much worse. What is surprising is that the current crop of Democrats have apparently not gotten the memo.
Is that revisionist history the same that claims Ronald Reagan, a man who ignored AIDS and homelessness throughout his administration, who raised taxes after he cut them, who started a dangerous era of exorbitant deficit spending, was a great president? Just checking.
Unfortunately, revisionist history has helped to portray Franklin Roosevelt and his policies as great examples. Historical inaccuracies try to give Roosevelt credit for bringing us out of a depression when in fact, all that Roosevelt did was prolong the depression and take us through it.
A wide cross section of contemporary historians have shed light on that fact, however, society is lazy and shallow. Society prefers to hear about quick fixes and turns away from complex analysis’s of facts. They would prefer to think that that the easy way out is the best way out. Given that, since spending is easy and it is what Roosevelt did, our society goes with the flow and accepts the distortions and deceit laid out before them.
Add to that the fact that most Americans feel very detached from the numbers being thrown around in Washington and do not necessarily relate figures like $ 8oo billion to themselves and you have a lot of naïve people being led around like a flock of sheep.
American participation in te european theater was at te request of Britain, who was abot to fall due in large part to an unprepared postion they were in prior to attacking germany. Pearl Harbor was a flag event to intervene in european geo-politics which we didn't need to be involved in. unless ofcourse germany wanted to get thier asses anded to tem after we knocked japan out.

You may want to look into your history books a little bit Don't. Don't forget that at the beginning of the war GM was producing large amounts of engines for the German tanks and IBM was designing the computers to facilitate sorting of prisoners in the concentration camps. America followed a position of isolationism, financially reaping the benefits of war from both sides until the allies came close to the point of bankruptcy. America only stepped in when it became apparent that Germany may actually win the war and the effect it could have on themselves. Not to belittle the sacrifices made by the American people but the government entirely had its own interests first and foremost.
Ericgurr, that is a very interesting question. And right now we have a bill racing through congress that expands the size of government by 33%, allows euthanasia, and pays off the good party members who got our President elected. hmm....
Actally Japan being netural with Russia allowed Russia to transfer almost 250,000 troops and thousands of t-34s to the western front. With better diplomacy Mussolini would have been allies with France the UK. Without sending aid to Russia Moscow would have fallen. German troops would have been moved to the Western Front. We still would have won, and you are right about the Soviet Union, but at what price in American lives and treasure? The question for today is who will be the next Hitler or Mussolini? And where will he come from?
Well Mr. Gurr your right about US aid to the allies. The larger question from that aid is that in the end the US is thus an accomplic to the Soviets being able to dominate Eastern Europe for almost 50 years. Had the US been wisher and only sent aid to the UK well hard to say. But it would have been a better choice in my mind.
You have missed the point entirely. The fighting men of England and Russia could not have won the war without U.S. assistance in terms of manufacturing, money and food. America supplied Russia with aircraft and tanks even before Germany declared war VIA Churhchill and England. It is not an issue of crying children it is an issue of scarcity of resources. I am not speaking of a skirmish in the Middle East or Africa, I am speaking of a large scale engagement of a tyrannical regime or several allied together. Without U.S. soldiers England and Russia would have prevailed in WWII, without U.S. economic and manufacturing assistance, they would have lost and we would all live in a very different world.

Maditude that drop if you read the news for 2 seconds had nothing to do with the Stimuls plan. Sorry but it had to do with the new Sec. of Treasury who announced a new plan with the bail out money. The banks did not like his plan which is more for main street then into their pockets.
It is only a matter of time. I don't think you have to fear. It's not going to work. Wall Street demonstrated that today by dropping almost 400 points.

I know this post will be controversial so I'd like to defend my actions first. I read about three hours every night, and sometimes ten hours per day on the weekends. I read some fiction, but most of what I read is history. I would not write a piece like this if I didn't feel I could back it up with strong historical parallel.
