Bad news for Obama

The New Jersey Governor's race has been called by several news outlets and it looks as if a Republican will be elected. The last time a GOP candidate beat a Democrat in New Jersey was in 1993. Just one year later the GOP took the House of Representatives and the Senate in Washington D.C.

The numbers under the covers are even scarier for Democrats. In many counties in New Jersey Republicans picked up huge vote swings over the last election in 2008. In Virginia Republicans swept all three big races.

In New York it appears from early returns that the Democrat could win the house seat, but this is as worrisome as the New Jersey race. In New York's 23 district the Democrat Owens doesn't even face a Republican challenger. Despite running against a relatively unknown third party candidate the Democrat is only slightly ahead.

If we use history as a guide a couple of things are becoming very clear. The big health care overhaul proposed by the Democratic leadership is now all but certain to fail, much as Hillary health care went down fifteen years ago. It also would appear that the Democrats will lose many more than the average of 17 seats in the house in a mid-term election. The GOP now appears well positioned to pick up in excess of 30 seats in 2010. If New Jersey is an indicator, the GOP could in fact take the house just as they did in 1994.

"It has to do with how Dems and the media made these races into a review of Obama's policies Brad." Ummm... please explain to me how Obama did that. Media, absolutely. Obama... umm... posted by brinmat on 11/04/2009 @ 1:47

----When the President makes 3 stump speech visits in a couple of weeks and says the candidate is key to his agenda......Yes i'm afraid Obama injected a review of his policies into the race. And lost.
True Brin - NJ, NY, MA and a few other states dems are NOT representative of the party ideals, as TX, IA, MT Repubs are not representative of their party ideals. Just bad, bad party leaders trying to make a name and others trying to make a buck selling out the rest and get into office riding a line bought and paid for via corruption. I like a LOT of both of the major parties platforms, but its never *ENFORCED*. I like the idea of no political parties best :)
And as anyone who lives in close proximity to or in the state of New Jersey, the NOTORIOUS and blatant corruption and abuse of the average person continues. I know - I live in her politically speaking bastard mother state of NY. This is NOT a win for the people, but a win for the big old boys network that has plagued both of our states for too long. Corzine was a billionare and a jerk, but at least cleaner than any other Jersey politico in my lifetime.

It has to do with how Dems and the media made these races into a review of Obama's policies Brad. They should not have, but now it is not looking good for them.
This isn't bad news as far as Obama and the Democratic agenda goes. Governors have very very very little to do with national policy.
I agree with u Hub. But I don't know that Owens keeps the seat next year. With a GOP primary they pick a less moderate and someone with a personality I think things could be differant.
Coffman reminds me of a stiff Puritan or something. He comes off rigid to me. Where is his personality?
Anyways I doubt that the NY-23 will ever again put into the race a liberal republican. I am sure they can find someone to take on Owens should he win.
throw in the 5% liberal Scozzova took and u change the game.
He was smart to stay out of high stakes debates. 45% Hoffman 48% Owens. Starting to tighten up even more.
No I just thought Hoffman was a loser. He coudln't debate.
wow blommberg almost lost despite his $35,000 per minute spending sprew.
its 45% hoffman 49% owens. I see wiz thinks the gop should have run a liberal republican who would have voted with his pal from Ohio.
I still predict a Hoffman loss.
Kempite is rigging the votes in New Jersey. lol Either way everyone loses because the Democrats and the Republicans are just about the same. Both parties screw the economy and are sure to try to take more from your pocketbook.
